Management Consulting and Educational Services

The ISO Management Series of Standards

The ISO-based series of management standards define the requirements for the most widely accepted model for management systems and quality assurance in the world.  In fact 400 of the United States' 500  largest public corporations (The Fortune 500) have operations registered to one or more ISO-based management systems standards.

ISO boasts over one million ISO 9001 certifications issued in over 170 countries and economies according to The ISO Survey of Certifications 2009.  Based upon the eight quality management principles (see survey results / read the article) ISO 9001 Quality management systems - Requirements includes requirements for a process approach

ü to ensure that customer requirements and statutory and regulatory requirements that apply to its products are determined and met

ü to establish policies and measurable objectives

ü to monitor and measure the effectiveness of its processes

ü to achieve continual improvement of the effectiveness of its management systems in fulfilling customer requirements, enhancing customer satisfaction and achieving objectives.

The most effective ISO-based management system implementations are found where top management has transformed its vision and strategy statements into an integrated set of objectives and measures that describe their organization's long term drivers of success; and, has recognized the value these systems have in protecting their good name and/or brand image.

The International Organization for Standardization - ISO

The United States joined with 25 other nations in 1946 to form the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which was established in 1947 "to facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards".  It is now a network of the national standards institutes of over 170 countries with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland that coordinates the system.

Many users of the ISO 9001-based, ISO 14001 or ISO 22000 management systems standards choose to have their implementation independently audited and certified as conforming.  ISO itself does not perform certification to its ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 22000 management systems standards, and contrary to popular belief, it does not exercise control over the "self-declared" accreditation bodies such as: ANAB (United States, ANSI-ASQ), CNAB (China), DAR/TGA (Germany), INMETRO (Brazil), RvA (Netherlands), SCC (Canada), UKAS (United Kingdom), etc. that accredit certification bodies (registrars) to carry out conformity assessments of organizations' management systems.

Certification Bodies

Certification bodies (often referred to as registrars) and the accreditation bodies that accredited them are not all the same and organizations should select their certification body wisely.  For example, is the Accreditation  Body that accredited your registrar, or the registrar you plan on using, a member of the IAF (International Accreditation Forum, Inc.)?  If not, you might want to ask why?

Buyer Beware!

An organization seeking certification of one of its management systems should particularly be wary if a potential service provider offers 'certification' services and the provider is not accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation body - the certificates they issue may have very limited value in the eyes of customers.

Unfortunately there are so many examples of this that automotive industry auditors are specifically instructed to verify the mark of the accreditation body on the certificates of the suppliers to the organization they are auditing, if there is no mark from a nationally recognized accreditation body on the certificate, the organization has to notify their supplier that their certificate is not acceptable.

An organization might also want to take into consideration such factors as industry approvals and customers who correlate sub-standard suppliers with their certification body to determine if there are any concerning trends.

Another concern should be auditor credentials.  Certification bodies are marketing the value and benefits of third party certification and some, but not all, require that their auditors be certified by an independent third party such as IRCA, NQI or RABQSA.  If a certification body isn't requiring their auditors to be third party certified, you might question whether they believe in what they are selling.  Industry experience may also be important, what are the certification body's auditor industry-qualification policies?

Finally, if the Certification Body unconditionally guarantees certification of your organization's quality, environmental, occupational health and safety, or food safety management systems, think about what that means – they offer the same promise to any organization?  You might want to consider a registrar whose certificates are internationally recognized as the most rigorous – that has value!

ISO 9001:2015
The next revision of ISO 9001 is now officially slated for publication in 2015.
The United States Technical Advisory Group (TAG), to ISO TC176, which is responsible for developing consensus positions on ISO 9001, is no longer calling for stakeholder feedback and is continuing on development of the next committee draft.
It appears that there will be an increased foxus on the process approach.

Can ISO 9001 certification improve organization workmanship performance?
Yes! According to recent research conducted by Joseph Iwaro and Abrahams M Washa PhD that was published in the Quality Management Journal. This study concluded, "Based on the hypotheses tested, this study concluded there was a direct correlation among ISO certification, organization workmanship performance, and improvement in workmanship factors, which was very substantial".
